Germany: Merkel calls for ‘bilingualism and integration’ for Turkish immigrants

Is assimilation the same as “bilingualism and integration”? Has Merkel really softened her stance as I feared some days ago?

She said both languages should be taught, highlighting the importance of bilingualism and the integration of immigrants into German society.

“What is unacceptable is for this to be an excuse for Turks living in Germany not to learn the German language. The language of the country one lives in is the precondition for good integration,” said Merkel, stressing that the goal was not assimilation.

“This is about everybody keeping their roots, their culture and their belief, but those of the third and fourth generation living in Germany should be able to participate in our social life.”

About a week ago I began a series where I’ll be looking at Turkey’s role in spreading radical Islam, as well as other things. Turkey is not the good ally we may think.

Regarding Merkel, it sounds like she may be hedging her political bet? It’s funny how the Europeans today don’t want to resist the new fascism for fear of being compared to old fascists, so they call anyone who wants to stand up for himself a fascist. It’s easier to understand than it is to explain… :)

    Aw, for @#$’s sake.

Yeah, I’m sure they’re really going to “assimilate.”

And it take 3 to 4 generations to do that? I guess I should still be speaking Yiddish then, since my grandfather did before he came to the U.S. and LEARNED ENGLISH.

  5. Claudia says:

Yes, Angel, let’s see how the immigrants respond…

earlylight: I’ll be reading them. Certainly, it isn’t.

Well, I think that despite her rejection for the idea of Turkey in the EU, she knows the number of Turks in Germany and she must swim with those two waters ahead.

(PS: Uncheck the Comment Luv’s box if you don’t add your blog. ;) If you don’t do that, the link there is not your blog’s…).

Karen: Your grandfather didn’t have any other alternative but to learn English. Now immigrants are not obliged to. In fact, in the Generation Jihad documentary I posted here, some days ago, there was an imam, that after living 22 years in the UK, didn’t know how to speak English. But it wasn’t an issolated case, and that’s the main problem. You don’t speak the language, you’re not integrated. You can’t speak with people outside your community, can’t read other newspapers outside your community nor you can watch TV or listen to the radio if they are not produced in your language.
So, why is it taking soooo long for Govts to understand this?
